The Concept of Selling Out.
When I tell people that have worked traditional jobs that I am giving up self-employment to go to a more traditional job with traditional hours, they look at me like I have dashed their own hopes of getting out of their cubicle farm. “Why would you want to sell out?”
For me, I see neither working for one’s self nor working for another as better or worse than the other option. I think it is all about what works at what point in one’s life.
Before my son, working 7 days a week doing interesting projects in areas of writing, marketing, technology, and education were my bliss as much as my paycheck. Now, my son is my everything. It really changed me. Sort of.
I still have the inkling to take on a bunch of projects, and I would probably get everything done. However, I might not be able to really schedule around things well enough to feel like I was getting everything done and getting enough time with my adorable “Monkeyface.”
I have had a great interview for a great job at a local institution and several fantastic offers from places that want me to move my family and myself out of state. I still have some projects and classes going on (look for a new series I’ve produced for another website – I’ll email my list when it goes life) – but I really look forward to doing all the things I do for just one “client” and having my off time to spend with my family.
In years of presidential politics, the word “feminism” is thrown around like a dirty word. Remember your history. Feminism isn’t about changing what “all women must do” from one thing to another. Feminism is about having the freedom to make the choice that is right for you. Many that read this will still have the dream of starting their own online business, and I will probably still be around to help you, in between hiking, biking, camping, teaching my son to talk and far less exciting things that I am really looking forward to!
